Will Exercise Counteract a Poor Diet?If you stay true to an exercise regimen, then it’s not uncommon to reward yourself with a little treat. For instance, if you work out consistently for two weeks straight, you might eat a slice of pizza as a way to pat yourself on the back. Some individuals, however, believe that exercising negates the effects of an unhealthy diet. That is to say, they think they can eat all the fast food and snacks they want as long as they exercise with some consistently. But, is there any truth to that idea?

To put it simply, NO! There is no benefit to eating an unhealthy diet just because you exercise frequently. In fact, eating poorly can make your workout routine irrelevant. But, what other effects can a poor diet have on your exercise?

  1. No Actual Weight Loss

If you’re exercising to shed a few pounds but you don’t want to quit eating your favorite foods, then you’re not actually ever going to lose any weight. You may drop a pound here or there, but exercising and eating poorly is not how you lose weight consistently. Exercise is designed to burn calories. You have to burn about 3,500 calories to lose a single pound of body weight. If you’re eating junk food, then you’re just putting all those calories back in your body. It is a no-win situation.

  1. Increased Lethargy

Eating greasy foods is not conducive to producing energy. Over time, you will find that you simply don’t have the energy or motivation to work out. Eating a balanced, healthy diet can provide you with all the energy you need to get up and workout longer. Junk food only leads to more lethargy.

  1. Negative Health Issues

A poor diet increases the likelihood of incurring diseases like diabetes. It can also put you at greater risk of having strokes or heart attacks. Exercising while eating a consistently poor diet can actually create a greater risk of heart-related problems. Because unhealthy foods tend to increase blood pressure and heart rate, your heart will already be working double time to keep you alive. When you add strenuous exercise to the mix, it may be a recipe for disaster. Your heart may not be able to withstand the add strain and the likelihood of a heart attack increases enormously.

Eating poorly while trying to exercise is going to send confusing signals to your body. It is universally inadvisable to eat unhealthy foods and continue to exercise. Of course, it is not advisable to just stop exercising and continue eating your poor diet. If you really want to make the most out of your exercise regimen, then it’s important to opt for a healthy diet full of natural foods that will increase energy and help burn fat.
